Govt fixes Rs 130 per month as cable service charges, cable operators refuse to tow policy lines

SHRIVIBHAVANA

Bengaluru: One of the major announcements made by the state government in the budget session was that from April onwards, the cable service charges per month will be capped at Rs.130. But in Bengaluru, cable operators have openly violating the government direction in this regard and have been collecting Rs.300 month per month.
According to the state government announcement, across the state, cable charges per month will be capped at Rs.130 following the complains that few cable operators are exploiting the viewers. Few law makers also alleged that cable operators are supplying Made in China set top boxes and are earning huge commission. Following these charges, state government issued directions that monthly cable fee would be capped at Rs.130 per connection.
But in Bengaluru, cable operators continue to charge Rs.300 per month. "State government had announced that customers need not pay more than Rs.130 per month. But our cable operator is declining to follow government order. His argument is that government order excludes paid channels and today most of the entertainment channels are paid channels. So we need to pay Rs.300 per month," said Shyamala Acharya, a resident of Malleshwaram.
But cable operators have a different point of view. "Government order is un realistic. Today all the channels except new channels are paid channels. We need to pay per connection to the channels. Rs.130 is fixed if customers are viewing only free to air channels,' said a cable operator who wished to be anonymous.
